San Marcos to San Antonio, TX

Tuesday April 19, 2005

I woke up behind the travel trailer at the Sac-n-Pac. I got a lot of good sleep. It's already bright outside.

I came to the Sac-n-Pac. Let me see if I can find a cigarette. I have two bucks for breakfast.

7:45am  I found out what time it is. I'm going to leave at eight.

Todd gave me a cigarette in front of the Sac-n-Pac. I appreciate it, brother. Everybody gets credit, thanks.

7:52am  I'm leaving. I feel great. Another full day of walking.

                   Exit 199, Posey Road.

Oh, there's a truckstop at Exit 193. I'm one mile away from Exit 196.

                   York Creek Road.

Mile Marker 198. I'm going to stop and take my thermal off.

Walking over Comal County Line. I'm glad to be out of Hays.

                   Walking past Exit 196.

                   Marker 197.

Passing Texas Plywood and Lumber Company, Inc. York Creek Road is that way.

Coming up on mile marker 196. Right before Exit 195. Right before Watson Lane and Old Bastrop Road.

                   Exit 195. Mile Marker 196.

8 miles to New Braunfels, 39 to San Antonio.

I had a good little rest at the Lane Bastrop bridge. I was able to scrape another resin hit out of my one-hitter.

                   Marker 195.

New Braunfels 7, San Antonio 38.

                   Marker 194. There's Exit 193 coming up. Gas/Food. Cool, there's a TA truckstop.

Coming up to the TA truckstop. I'm going to go bum a cigarette and chill out.

En el truckstop Fernando me dio un cigaro. Te lo agradezco, señor. Todo el mundo recibe crédito, gracias.

The greedy ass at the TA told me I couldn't ask for rides. Oh well.

I ate a 500 calorie honeybun that I bought this morning. I'm going to keep walking.

Canyon Lake 1 mile. On Exit 191.

Walking in front of the Walmart Distribution Center. "Our people make the difference." Bullshit.

I'm going to hit up the Burger King.

Javier at the Burger King told me no. He told me, "Oh, we can get you water."

He said, "We don't usually do that, but I'll be happy to get you some water." I already have water.

I hit up another place and they told me no.

                   New Braunfels is way greedy.

Umm, I need a new tennis ball. I don't have another one. I'm going to walk through the Langtree Village Apartments and look around to see if they have a tennis court. Maybe I can find a loose ball.

I'm going to walk down this road that kind of goes parallel to the highway. I'm going to walk it and get known. Get seen.

I'm hungry and I can already see the Taco Cabana sign.

Business 35. Also known as Elliot Knox Boulevard. Walking in front of the Comal Independent School District. There should be a highschool around here somewhere. You know what most high schools have, tennis courts.

No tennis courts anywhere. They have a running track and everything, but no tennis courts.

San Antonio 34 and Boerne 44. I thought Boerne was before San Antonio. I couldn't have walked that far already. Only thirty four miles to San Antonio. That's bullshit. I think it's fifty four.

I cannot even begin to describe the great publicity I've gotten on this walk. This is so awesome.

I came to the Pizza Hut right next to the Taco Cabana. I'm going to go hit them up.

At the Pizza Hut I told the girl my line and she was all, "Sure." She hooked me up with a coffee and I started telling her my story. Some other guy came who was applying for a job. When he heard I was walking to San Antonio he told me, "Do you want a ride?" I told him sure. I might be getting a ride. Hopefully he's got some weed. Oh yeah, first I asked the girl at the Pizza Hut, "Do you have any mistakes you can hook me up with?" She said, "What? Cinnamon sticks?" I told her, "Oh, will you hook me up with some cinnamon sticks then?" She said, "We don't have any made, but I'll make you a pizza. What do you want?" I smiled and told her, "Surprise me."

I just talked to that dude who offered me a ride and he wouldn't listen to my story. I'm going to eat my pizza and take off walking again.

It was Yvonne at the Pizza Hut who hooked me up. I appreciate it, Yvonne. Everybody gets credit, thanks.

It was cool. I had asked the dude, "Are you going to San Antonio anyway?" He said yes and I told him, "Alright, well if you see me walking pick me up, ok?"

I'm going to walk into Grand Cypress Apartments. Going to check for tennis courts.

1:00pm  I went into those apartments and immediately saw some guy sitting at the bottom of the stairs smoking a cigarette. I asked him, "Hey, do you know if there are any tennis courts in these apartments?" He said no. I started telling him my story and he invited me to go smoke some weed! Awesome. What was your name? Chris. Thanks a lot. Everybody gets credit.

That was just an awesome encounter I just had. Right when I walked by at first the gates opened for me and everything. I saw this dude sitting down smoking a cigarette outside. I hit him up for my story. Where I say, "I will tell you exactly how I plan to do this if you are willing to listen and only then. I hate wasting my time. I'll find somebody else to tell it to," he said, "No, no. As soon as you said pot, I'm going to listen." Then he asked me, "Do you have a pipe?" I told him, "I sure do, but I don't have anything to put in it." We went to his car and he had a big sack of weed. We went down by the Guadalupe River and smoked some weed. He hooked me up with a lot too. I took a picture. Man, that was awesome! I am having the best day.

I'm 47 miles away from Austin. 33 to San Antonio.

                   San Antonio 32.

I came to El Monterrey Cafe. I'm going to sit down and smoke a cigarette and smoke some weed. I'm not going to hit them up for food. I'm not hungry.

Okay, I sat down and smoked a cigarette and smoked some weed. I'm all happy now. Walking. My feet feel great too.

For about five miles or so I've been walking on the grass because my tennis ball is worn out. Let's see how long I can keep this up.

Shit, I lost my tennis ball. It came off by itself. Umm, I'm just going to wear the stick on my back.

Please Love, I need a tennis ball.

I think I've walked a good sixteen miles today.

It was awesome at those apartments earlier. Right when I walked in front there was a car coming out and the gate opened. I casually walked up to it and when I entered the apartments, I had like less than a foot of clearance on each side while the gate was closing. I saw that kid sitting down and told him my story. We went and toked by the Guadalupe and he hooked me up with some weed. Thank you, Love. Thank you, Love. Do you see how things like that happen to me?

                   Coming up on Rueckle Road.

Coming up on Mile Marker 184. There's a bridge over there. I want to sit down and rest my feet.

Marker 184. Please Love, grant me a tennis ball.

Cool, there's an Exxon. I'm going to rest there. Maybe there's an ashtray.

                   I'm up from my rest.

                   Walking over Four Mile Creek.

                   Exit 182.

I walked by this snake farm. It was weird. They sold rocks and fossils and stuff, so I went inside to ask the guy some questions. All of a sudden, these two black guys pull up and ask me how far San Antonio was from there. My ears perked and I said, "Oh, you guys are going to San Antonio? Can I get a ride?" They told me sure. That they were going by the airport. But then I changed my mind. Screw it, I want to walk it just so I can say I walked all the way back.

Rest Area 1 mile. That's where I'll rest.

I'm at Exit 180 right now. Schwab Road.

Mile Marker 181. I came to the restroom at the rest area.

Sergio me dio cinco dolares para comprar comida. Te lo agradezco, Sergio. Todo el mundo recibe crédito, gracias.

At the rest stop I saw this Mexican dude about my age cleaning up. I asked him if he smoked weed and he said, "I'm already high." I asked him if he could spare any change for a snack. He only had thirty cents, but he told me, "Go ask those Mexican people for money. They'll probably hook you up." The first guy I asked gave me a five dollar bill!

I bought me a smorgasbord with those five dollars. I bought me a Texas Size cinnamon roll, an apple pie, a six-pack of donuts, a blueberry cheese Danish and some Oreo cookies. I'm all loaded up now.

5:00pm  I'm leaving the rest stop.

                   Marker 179.

Whoa, San Antonio 23 miles. I'm going to get there today.

Exit 177. I'm going to rest at 175. That's where all these billboards are pointing to.

Exit 176 is only 3/4 a mile away. Weidercin Road.

Just walked over the Guadalupe County Line.

                   Marker 177.

Exit 175. Natural Bridge Caverns Road.

San Antonio 21. Hmm, there might be a VIA bus stop pretty soon. I'm hoping. If there is I'll do that.

I never rested at Exit 175. I just kept walking.

Now walking in front of Garden Ridge Pottery. I'm in Schertz.

Holy shit, right after Garden Ridge Pottery I see these guys pull into the parking lot, get out and start shouting at me. It turns out they saw me at Marley Fest and stopped to give me a ride! Since I wasn't too far away from Bracken, I decided I'd go visit my old friend Lucy Greer Burton. I got dropped off in Bracken, but it turns out Lucy didn't live there anymore. I'm going to go say hi to Lupe.

I came over to the Hangin' Tree Saloon and Bill hooked me up with a cigarette. I appreciate it, Bill. Everybody gets credit, thanks.

I just got a ride on a motorcycle! He was hauling ass going sixty or seventy. This guy named Bill. Oh yeah, it was awesome that I got that ride to begin with. Right when I walked past Garden Ridge Pottery these kids recognized me. I saw them across the highway waving their arms. I couldn't believe I got recognized already. I just got into town. It was some dude who had seen me at Marley Fest in Austin. He said he had seen me at the Kerrville Folk Fest too. I got the idea to go to Bracken. Lucy wasn't there. Lupe was there. She was busy though. She had company. I walked to the Hangin' Tree Saloon and sat down and ate my cookies. I started talking to this dude Bill. I asked him if he could give me a ride to Rolling Oaks Mall on 1604 where I could catch the bus. Like three miles away. He tells me, "Sure, if you don't mind riding bitch." At first I didn't know what that meant. Then I realized he drove a motorcycle. I had a blast!

9:19pm  I just switched out a new tape. I'm on the bus now. I caught the 88 at Travis Park and it's going down Bandera now. Let's see, after I got dropped off at the bus stop by the guy on the motorcycle, I had two good presentations at the stop. From in front of the Walmart on 1604, I rode the #9 to Travis Park. I called my mom on her cellphone. They're celebrating my little brother's birthday(which is today) at Dave and Buster's. At first I told her I was going to ride the bus up there, over by 410 and Fredericksburg, then I saw the 88 pull up and decided I'd just ride the 88 to the Walmart on Mainland. Then I'll figure out how to get home from there. That's what I'll do.

I just got on the bus right now and I asked this guy in the back if I could tell him my story. He told me, "Ahh, I really don't want to hear it."

9:30pm  I'm on the 88 and Josh(5-15-04, 5:02pm and 4-7-05, 6:03pm) got on the bus. I always forget his name. We're going to smoke weed when we get to the Walmart.

Download What Is To Be Done? By Vladimir Lenin. I'll download it off of Undernet on IRC. From #bookz.

Also The Science of Evolution, Introduction by Lenny Wolff.

I don't know what time it is, but I'm at the Walmart on Mainland. I'm leaving the Walmart now. I might walk to HEB and ask for a ride.

10:47pm  My mom is going to pick me up at the HEB. She was on her way from Dave and Buster's. Cool, cool. My feet hurt. She didn't seem like she was upset for me not cleaning. Or not cleaning as much before I left for Austin.

We were in the HEB and my mom finally mentioned something about me "leaving in a hurry." She said, "I told you I would pay you if you helped me with the house." I told her, "Mom, you told me to do the floor. And since I couldn't find any of that Fabuloso cleaner, I couldn't do the floor." She's just pissed off because her lazy ass had to clean it herself. I told her, "Mom, I'm trying to save the world here and saving the world is a lot more important than cleaning your mess. Look how long I have been cleaning your mess anyway."

Ugh, I wish she would learn already. I bet you the house is trashed.

I don't know what time it is, but I just got out of the shower. I hadn't showered in a good four days or so. That shower felt just great. I'm going to go raid the fridge.

11:39pm  I'm going to crash. I don't have anything to do. My mom's on the computer. I'm tired. I feel great though. Tomorrow there is some more Fiesta.

Next day..
